Sick Policy

sick young girl in bed with her teddy bear

As the seasons change, runny noses, watery eyes, and seasonal allergies begin. This is a friendly reminder of our sick policy. Please do not bring your child to the Precious Moments Christian Academy if s/he is sick. Please call the center or send an email if your child is not coming to school for the day. A physician’s note will be needed to show that your child has been cleared to be around other children if a contagious type of sickness has occurred. It is stated in the Pennsylvania statute 3270.137 that if a child has symptoms of a communicable disease or infection that be transmitted directly or indirectly that may threaten the health of other children in care, they shall be excluded from attendance until the Center receives notification from a physician or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) that the child no longer poses a threat to the health of others. Your child can return to the center once s/he is no longer contagious. It usually takes 24 hours after the symptoms are completely gone and/or 24-48 hours after antibiotics have begun depending on the illness to consider a child to be safe around other people.

Your child cannot come to the Precious Moments Christian Academy if s/he has a fever of 100° or higher. Before being permitted to return to the center, they must be fever-free for a minimum of 24 hours. To be fever-free means they no longer need the aid of fever-reducing medication. It is unacceptable to administer fever-reducing medication before arriving at the center as the fever might possibly reappear. If this happens, the child will be sent home. Even though the center is sanitized throughout the day, sick children will put other children/staff in care at risk.

Below are a few examples of when to keep your child home:

  • Fever of 100° or higher
  • Cold with thick green/yellow nasal discharge
  • Productive cough with green/yellow discharge
  • Persistent phlegmy cough
  • Croup
  • Strep throat
  • Gastroenteritis (Stomach flu)
  • Vomiting
  • Ringworm
  • Chicken Pox
  • Hand Foot Mouth Disease (Coxsackie)
  • Persistent Diarrhea (even if it is a reaction to antibiotics or teething)
  • Mumps
  • Impetigo
  • Conjunctivitis (Pinkeye)
  • Head Lice (children with head lice must be free of bugs, nits, and eggs)
  • Scabies
  • Fifth’s disease

Each individual case is different and may require more or less time out of Precious Moments Christian Academy. If you feel that your child is sick with a contagious illness, please verify with your child’s physician if s/he is clear to come to school before bringing him/her to the center. This is done for the protection of your child and all other children and staff at the Precious Moments Christian Academy. This sick policy will be strictly enforced for the safety of all. It is our hope to keep our center as “healthy” as possible. Once ONE child comes the center sick, s/he is exposing everyone to that illness. It can be a horrible “sick cycle” if a child continually comes to the center sick. Repetitive disregard of the sick policy can lead to the termination of the childcare at the discretion of the Center Director. Let’s work together and keep it healthy!
